BEHS Mechanical Physics
Syllabus

Introduction-

Mechanical Physics is the study of the principles of motion and energy in physics. In this class we will be studying four separate units on mechanical physics-

• Graphing and the Scientific Method
• Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration
• The Power of the Force
• Energy Transformations

These four units will prepare you for your future adventures in physics, and give you a solid base in scientific experimentation.

Assignments and Grading-

In each unit you will be asked to complete assignments and laboratories. All assignments will be submitted using email. (If you do not know how to attach a file in an email click here for a tutorial)You will be required to email me your completed assignments by using the following email address -davidsonsummerschool@gmail.com- All assignments and labs will need to saved with the same naming convention. The naming convention will be the following -your_name_assignmentname- For example if were turning in the scientific method assignment I would save your file as tom_davidson_scimeth. This naming convention will help me to keep track of all your assignments, as well as correct them in a timely manner.

Downloading files- Some assignment require you to download files. A dialogue box will open asking you to open or save the file. SAVE the file. Most computers will automatically download to your desktop (screen with all your stuff). Go to the desktop and rename the file according to the format described. ZIP folders- To download and use a file in a ZIPPED folder follow the same instructions above, but when you open the folder you must drag the file to the desktop before opening it. Once you have you may delete the ZIP folder.

In addition to assignments and labs you will take unit exams at the conclusion on each unit. These will be hosted by UTIPS. User names and login information will be provided for you when you sign up for this class.

The grades will break down in the following manner-

• 4 Tests worth 10% each
• Unit one assignments and labs 15%
• Unit two assignments and labs 15%
• Unit three assignments and labs 15%
• Unit four assignments and labs 15%

Schedule-

This class is self paced. Each unit will require you to complete about 8-10 hours of work. Be careful not to wait till the last minute to complete all your assignments. The only deadlines will be for the weekly discussion (which should keep you on track), and for your proposal for your final project. This will be due three weeks before the end of the class. Your first assignment is to send me an email confirming that you have read and understand the syllabus. Use the naming format and email address used above. The name of this assignment is syllabus.
