Objective:

To increase knowledge of scientific concepts and recognize how often physics concepts are used in and applied to everyday situations.

Points can be earned in six different ways. They are:

1 Lab Notebooks (40%) - includes in-class notes and activities often done in partnerships or in groups as well as a final notebook

  • Homework (16%) - time spent outside of class practicing physics concepts.
  • Tests (30%) - taken in class to assess knowledge.
  • Bell quizzes (10%) daily quizzes completed at the beginning of each hour .
  • Lifetime Skills (4%) - includes but is not limited to laboratory conduct, cooperation, and safety.

Notice: Classroom activities are worth different percentages of your grade. DO NOT add up the total points earned and divide it by the total points possible. THIS METHOD WILL NOT GIVE AN ACCURATE REFLECTION OF A GRADE! Current grades and attendance can be found by looking at the bulletin board in the classroom or on the interner at http://studentinfo.boxelder.kl2.ut.us Usernames and passwords to check grades and attendance on the internet can be obtained from the counseling office.

BELL QUIZZES:

At the beginning of the hour, students will pickup their bell quiz paper from front desk. When the tardy bell rings, students should refer to the power-point for the bell quiz for that day. Any papers that have not been picked up by the time the tardy bell rings will be collected by the instructor and the students will be marked tardy or absent. Students will receive 5 points for attempting the bell quiz each day and have the chance to receive 1 bonus point for answering correctly. Missed bell quizzes can be made up by going to the class web page www.behsscience.com and completing the make up bell quiz assignment.

LIFETIME SKILLS:

Laboratory conduct, classroom cooperation, and personal responsibility are examples of items contributing to lifetime skills. All students will automatically be given full credit (100 points) for demonstrating lifetime skills.

Anytime a student breaks a lab or classroom rule, shows disrespect to people in the classroom, or shows irresponsibility 10 points will be deducted from the 100 points they started with.

These points can be made up by performing service in the classroom for 30 minutes before or after school for each 10 points that were lost.

ATTENDANCE:

1. LATE OR MISSED CLASS? Students are expected to be on time and come to class each day. School policy states there can be a maximum of 6 absences per trimester. Any absence over 6 will need to be made up by spending time in the classroom.

Tardies 1-6 will affect your citizenship according to school policy .

0-1 tardies COULD earn Honors (H)

2-3 tardies COULD earn Satisfactory (S)

4-5 tardies COULD earn Needs Improvement (N)

6 or more tardies WILL earn Unsatisfactory (U)

A 2% bonus will be given to students with no tardies and honors citizenship.

2. MISSED A STAMP?

Students that are absent the day a stamp is given for an activity should complete the following steps:

Ask their lab partner what was missed or look on the calender to see what activity was missed.

Copy the notes or material missed from lab partner for 50% of the points.

To receive points for the stamp, look on the class web page and go to the makeup page: www.behsscience.com/physics/makeup.html and answer the questions out of the book that are specified for that stamp. All questions must be correct to receive points for the stamp. Make up questions can be handed in early or on the day that lab notebooks are due to receive the points for the stamp.

3. MISSED HANDING IN LAB NOTEBOOK?

Students absent the day the lab notebooks are due can hand in their lab notebook early or send it with a friend. If a lab notebook is not handed in the day it is due, the final points earned will be reduced by the following amounts:

1 day late = -10% 2 days late = -20%3 days late = -30%4 days late = -40%

5-10 days late = 50% More than 10 days late = NO CREDIT

4. MISSED A TEST?

If a student is going to be absent the day a test will be given and would like to have the chance to receive 100%, they need to schedule a time with the instructor to take the test before or after school BEFORE the test is given.

If they miss a test they have 10 days to make it up before or after school. If arrangements were not previously made, the final score will be reduced by 20%.

5. NEED TO USE THE HALL PASS?

Each student is given three hall passes for the trimester and cannot use the hall pass once they have used up all three of their hall passes. Unused hall passes will be worth 10 bonus points as part of the final notebook at the end of the trimester.

6. WHEN IS A TARDY AN ABSENCE?

If a student is more than 15 minutes late, they will be marked absent. They can still participate in the activity for the day and receive any stamps that are given that day, but will be marked absent in the attendance system.

LAST WORDS:

Do's

Do show respect to everyone in the classroom.

Do bring lab notebooks and a writing utensil to class every day.

Do return all textbooks and/or materials that have been checked out. If a textbook that has checked out is not returned by the end of the trimester, an incomplete (I) grade will be given. All incomplete (I) grades will turn into an F if arrangements are not made by the end of a 2 week period.

Don'ts

Do not bring food or drink into the classroom. All food and drink will be confiscated and disposed of .

Do not wear hats in the classroom or the auditorium.

Do not bring cellular phones, pagers, CD players, etc. into the classroom. They will be confiscated and can be picked up after school.

Do not use calculators as game playing devices. If a student is misusing their calculator, they will lose their privilege to use a calculator in the classroom.

All STUDENT WORK WILL BE LABELED WITH A STUDENT NUMBER. STUDENTS WILL CORRECT EACH OTHERS WORK. EVERY EFFORT WILL BE MADE TO PROTECT THE CONFIDENTIAL NATURE OF A STUDENTS SCORES AND POSTED GRADES AND ATTENDANCE.

ALL 504 AND SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS ARE ENTITLED TO REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS AS DETERMINED BY THE STUDENTS 504/IEP TEAM. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT AND PARENTS TO REVIEW THE ACCOMMODATION SHEET WITH EACH TEACHER AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH TRIMESTER AND DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE ACCOMMODATIONS FOR ANY GIVEN CLASS.
